Located in Old Goa, at Panjim, Se Cathedral is dedicated to the St. Catherine of Alexandria. Famed to be one of the largest churches in not just India but within Asia, this Church attracts hordes of tourists from everywhere.
It is also known as St. Catherine's' Cathedral. It was on the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria when in the year of 1510, Alfonso Albuquerque overthrew the Islamic Army and captured Goa.
Se cathedral is also known to be one of the oldest and the most revered religious place in Goa. It has been recognized by the UNESCO as a heritage site as well. It is easily accessible as well via buses as well as local taxis.
This Church was completed in the year of 1940; its construction took almost 80 years because of lack of funds and Spain’s temporary win over Portugal control in Goa. It is located towards the West of the Terreiro de Sabaio, the great square while its porch is facing the East side.
Se cathedral stands beautifully with its marvelous architecture. It has Portuguese styled architecture, perfectly encompassing a Tuscan peripheral and Corinthian core.
Se cathedral boasts of a captivating patio which can be reached via steps. With a height of 250 ft and a breadth of 181 ft, it mesmerizes visitors with its majestic beauty.
Se cathedral also has five massive bells. One of the largest bells in Goa, 'Golden Bell' is also placed here. You will also find various old painting, depicting the life of St. Catherine of Alexandria at the altar.
