One of the most famous historical places of Goa, Church & Convent of St Francis of Assisi attracts groups of tourists from everywhere.
This Church was established during the Portuguese rule by Eight Franciscan (1517 to 1521 AD). It boasts of being one of the best examples of Portuguese Architecture. Designed with Laterite, this church was initially a small chapel. In the year of 1529, it was reconstructed and was converted into a Church. In 1661 the church was remodeled. However, it was then closed in 1853 AD as the Portuguese government could not maintain the convent. Although in 1964 archaeological department converted the convent into a museum.
With an impressive structure of 250 feet in length and 181 feet in breadth, the entrance of the Church presents a striking beauty of original Portuguese Manueline architecture style which has been preserved till now. You will find scenes from Bible on the walls of the Church. There are paintings in the Church which belong to the 17th Century. The Altar if the church has also been designed beautifully. You will find the Corinthian decorative touch here at the Church. The wooden Idol of St. Francis also adds on to the overall beauty of the Church. Another Statue in the Church is of Our Lady of Miracles, which has been brought it from Sri Lanka.
The Dabolim International Airport is just 35 km away from this Church and the Thivim railway station is only 19 km from this place. You will find many buses from Panaji too.
