First-time travelers to Goa often assume that North Goa is always crowded while South Goa is quiet. Let us dispel this myth with a mention of Querim Beach. One of the lesser-known beaches of Goa’s north, this sandy beach is lined by some palm trees and also graced by a few rocky outcrops.

About Querim Beach

Querim Beach sits right at the top, adjacent to the state borders of Goa and Maharashtra. Part of Pernem, this beach is located in the village of Querim. The sandy beach starts from a point where the inlet of the Tiracol River flows to the Arabian Sea.

Querim Beach is the northernmost beach of the smallest state in the country. Even though this sandy beach is not as popular as most of the other beaches in Goa, there is much to be seen along this stretch.

What to Do on Querim Beach

Querim Beach has a number of unique attractions either on the beach itself or at a distance from the shore. Here are a few activity options:

1. Explore Querim Cave: Also known as Keri Beach, this powdery stretch has a sea cave at its southern end. The cave can be explored on foot but it is important to wear a pair of sturdy shoes with a strong grip as the rocks can be quite slippery inside the cave.

Querim Cave is perfect for those looking for a bit of adventure along an otherwise relaxed beach. You should carry a torch to illuminate your way as you go deeper inside the cave. At the mouth of the cave, though, you will have some light.

Keep a camera handy to take some brilliant shots of the cave interiors as well as the sea outside. You will find that the entire path has a brook running through it, making it difficult to balance for most part of the walk.

2. Try Paragliding: For another taste of adrenaline-filled activity, go paragliding. This recreational sport is best done by the beach as the wind levels are perfect to lift you up along with your glider aircraft (the wide parachute-like structure that is fastened to you).

You do not have to have any prior experience in paragliding as there will be an expert flying along with you, constantly guiding you on your posture (which must be like a cocoon to work with the wind) and where to hold.

This free-flying experience takes only a few minutes and it is worth taking high-resolution photos (as you will appear too small once you take off to the skies) and videos to capture the memories.

It may also happen that you have to hike for 15 to 20 minutes to a nearby hill before you can experience the flight. This is because taking off is much easier from a cliff.

3. Stop by Shri Ajoba Temple: If you are a religious tourist, you will come across Shri Ajoba Temple. This Hindu temple is dedicated to a demigod (half god) as per folk beliefs of the locals living in this area. It is recommended to drive here as the place is at some distance from the beach.

You will easily be able to park close to this temple. The shrine houses the idol of Shri Ajoba and several other local deities. You will also find the statues heavily garlanded. On some occasions, you may even be able to watch a religious procession.

Where to Eat at Querim Beach

There are not too many choices for dining along Keri Beach. However, you will find a couple of shacks as mentioned further:

Kris 99 Beach Shack: Open from 9 AM to 7 PM, this simple shack only has a thatched roof, some tables, chairs and benches and a few sunbeds on the beach. You can sip on fresh coconut water here and even ask for the coconut meat to be served to you.

Hidden Shack: Operating from 10 AM to 11:30 PM, this shack offers Goan, North Indian and Chinese cuisines at affordable rates. A pint of beer costs only INR 80 over here. You can also enjoy seafood at this place.

How to Reach Querim Beach

The hidden Querim Beach is tucked away in Goa’s far north. You can get here through a number of varied options:

By Air: If you fly into the Manohar International Airport in Mopa, it will take you 1 hour to cover the 33 kilometers to get to this beach. The distance from the Dabolim Airport is almost 75 km and it takes over 2 hours from there.

By Train: 21 km away, the nearest railway station to Querim Beach is Pernem Railway Station. It will take around 40 minutes to reach the beach from there.

By Bus: The nearest bus stop to the beach is the Keri Bus Stand in Pernem, just a short walk away. If you are arriving in Goa by an outstation bus to Panaji KTC Bus Stand, you can take a bus to Keri Bus Stand which is a 1 hour 15-minute ride or 50 km away.

By Car: Rent a four-wheeler from one of the top car rental companies in Goa to have the flexibility to drive where you wish. This part of North Goa is relatively untouched and it will be pleasurable to go on a drive here.

By Bike or Scooty: If you can only ride a two-wheeler, you will find plenty of bike or scooty rental companies willing to give you their two-wheelers along with a helmet. The narrow roads of North Goa can be conveniently explored this way.
