Spread across an area of 1.8 sq. km, Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is the smallest wildlife sanctuaries in Goa. As the name suggest, it has been titled after the prominent ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali.
This is nothing less than a paradise of birth watchers as a wide array of migratory birds can be spotted here. Apart from rich avian fauna, one can also spot jackals and crocodiles. Winter birds such as coots and pintails are also seen.
The type of vegetation on this area is Mangrove Scrub, forming an ideal ecosystem for breeding and refuge of various kinds of fish and insects.
Inside the sanctuary, you will find a three storeyed watchtower, which has been built to facilitate birdwatching. This tower offers an enchanting view of the sanctuary at three different levels. Tourist can get a panoramic view of the area at the canopy level, below canopy level and above canopy level of the vegetation.
It is located at the Charoa Island. To reach this sanctuary, tourists can take a bus or taxi to the Ribandar ferry wharf. From here, they can cross the Mandovi River via ferry to reach the Chorao Island. Although open throughout the year, it is difficult to go via boats during the high tides, as there are many water channels around the sanctuary.
To visit the sanctuary, one needs to get permission from the Chief Wildlife Warden of the Forest Department, Junta House, Panaji.
