Built in the year of 1602, the Church and monastery of St Augustine is believed to be constructed by the Augustinian friars. The construction of church which was started in 1597 and completed in 1602 took almost 400 years. The designer of the church isn’t known but has been believed to be of Italian origin.

You will also find eight chapels, four altars and wide monastery with various cells. Although only the ruins have remained now, it does makes for an insightful visit.

However, in 1835, owing to the authoritarian policies of the Portuguese Government, this church was abandoned. Since then it was neglected and hence the maintenance of the church suffered to a large extent. In the year of 1842, the deterioration of the Church began with the collapse of its vault which was soon followed by the entire body decay. However, the façade remained in good condition.

However, misfortune against stuck this beautiful exemplary of architecture when in 1931its remained part, façade and the half of the tower also collapsed. Again in 1938, some more part of the church collapsed. Although only half of the tower has remained after various phases of deteriorations, the tower is still visited by hordes of tourists who come here to witness its remarkable beauty.

The massive bell which has once beautified the tower has been moved to the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in 1871. This church is located in Panjim.
