No trip to Goa is complete without a bit of shopping. In the holiday capital of India, if you wish to combine a day at the beach with some unique purchases, Anjuna Flea Market is your best bet. This outdoor shopping area in North Goa is a treat both to your eyes and taste buds!

Overview of Anjuna Flea Market

A seasonal market, the Anjuna Flea is an outdoor set-up where you will find countless vendors with temporary stalls that sell a variety of trinkets and delicacies. You only need to step away from Anjuna Beach to enter the sprawling flea market full of colour, flavour, sounds and sometimes, crowds.

Anjuna Flea Market Timings

It is important to note that this outdoor flea is not always open. The sellers set up their stalls during the relatively cooler months of October through April. Anjuna Flea Market is closed from May to September (during the hot summers and unpredictable monsoon season).

Also, the flea market operates only on Wednesdays. So, if you wish to put this shopping spot on your itinerary, do not plan for any other days. The shopkeepers start setting up their stalls as early as 7:30 in the morning. However, if you wish to see all the goods on display, plan to arrive after 9 am. The peak rush at the Ajuna Market is between 11 am and 5 pm.

However, the shops don’t pack up until 7 pm, when the sun has set. You can also aim for better discounts after 6 pm when the shop owners are more eager to close their sales for the day.

What to Buy at Anjuna Flea Market

While it is not compulsory to make a purchase at this weekly flea, you will find it hard not to buy at least one item even if you resolve to stick to “window shopping”. Even though Anjuna Flea is known for its pre-loved items, you will find a plethora of new products as well. Regardless of what you buy, remember to bargain since the quoted prices are much higher than the final rate at which the sellers expect to give the articles away, even with a decent profit. Here’s a round-up of the things you can find here:

Antiques

From metallic utensils to glass shishas and wooden furniture to ceramic keepsakes, the antique collections found at Anjuna are vast in variety and number. You will come across not only traditional Indian articles but also Turkish lamps and Russian matryoshka dolls which are nested into one another.

Clothing & Accessories

If you wish to blend into the Goan landscape of beachgoers, browse through the vibrant collection of sarongs, tees, skirts, and shorts that flaunt bold designs and, sometimes, intricate patterns or block prints. Knitted or crocheted ponchos and lightweight kaftans can also be purchased here.

When it comes to accessorizing, the flea market will astound you with its beaded jewellery, oxidized metal necklaces, or macramé bracelets. Cloth bags, sun caps, leather chappals, and mirror-studded belts will help you complete your Goan street look.

Spices & Street Food

You can never go hungry while walking past the shops at Anjuna Flea Market because there are several stalls in between the rows of handicraft sellers where you will find hot noodles, fish fritters, or cold drinks. Apart from the food stalls, you will come across sellers of fragrant spices, aromatic tea leaves, and packed snacks that you can carry back with you.

Miscellaneous Items

Some unique finds at the flea are hammocks, fridge magnets, wall hangings, candle stands, dream-catchers, sequined storage boxes, hand-painted pots, and embroidered bed sheets. Some artists are also known to sell their paintings even as photographers display their enlarged pictures in decorative frames.

How to Reach Anjuna Flea Market

Anjuna Flea Market is located in the coastal village of Anjuna, not far from the famous beach with the same name – Anjuna Beach. You can get here via multiple modes of transportation, as listed below:

By Air: The newly built Manohar International Airport in Mopa is a 50-minute drive away from Anjuna Flea Market, which is about 30 kilometres to the South West, while the more popular Dabolim Airport is almost 50 km away, requiring a road journey of at least an hour and a half.

By Train: Thivim Railway Station is the nearest train station, around 20 km from the flea market. The journey by car or taxi will take less than 50 minutes.

By Bus: The closest bus stop to the Anjuna Flea is the Anjuna Bus Stop which is about 2 km away. When reaching Goa via an outstation bus, take a local bus from the Panaji KTC Bus Stand to the Mapusa Bus Stand. Then change into another bus to Anjuna. From there on, you can take a leisurely 30-minute stroll to the market. The total distance from the Panaji bus stop is almost 20 km though, which requires an hour’s drive if you do not wish to take the local buses.

By Car: Reach out to some of the top car rental companies in Goa if you prefer to be driven around and wish to avoid the hassle of self-driving or figuring out the local transportation. The national highways of India are well connected, allowing you to enjoy a road trip into Goa from any neighbouring state.

By Bike or Scooty: If you are travelling solo, as a couple or with just one friend, it is a good idea to rent a two-wheeler. Be sure to carry your license if you will be using a scooty or a bike. Helmets can also be rented along with the vehicle.
