Church of Our Lady of the Rosary Goa Address: Fatorda Margao, Goa, 403602, India
Situated on the top of the Monte Santo, overseeing the Mandovi River and the Divar Island, Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, one of the oldest churches in Goa, stands majestically.
It was built as a fulfillment of the vow taken by the Afonso de Albuquerque, who had guided his troops to victory from this site in 1510. This church was reassigned to the care of Franciscans in 1544.
The church presents as simplistic and elegant design. It represents a beautiful example of Manueline style, along with showcasing influences of Gothic style in rib-vault at the portico. The two storey portico of the church has been constructed with laterite and coated with lime mortar. Its tiled roof is held with wooden rafters. There are round towers, topped with cross, at the portico and the façade of the church.
It is consisted of two chapels and three altars. The main altar of the church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. To its right is a marble monument memorializing Dona Catarina, who was married to Viceroy Garcia De Sa. Their marriage was performed by St. Francis Xavier. The walls are creatively decorated with carved miniature pillars and inscriptions in Portuguese.
It offers a breath-taking view of the Mandovi River and Divar Island. However, due to various reasons the building is often locked, affecting the visitors’ entry.
This church is easily accessible. Tourists can hire a taxi or auto rickshaws or bike to reach here.
