Chapora Fort boasts of being one of the most frequented tourist spot in Goa. Located at a distance of 10 km from Mapusa and about 18 km away from Panaji, this majestic fort overlooks the popular Vagator Beach of Goa.

Also known as Shahpura meaning the “Town of Shah”, this fort was built with the motive to keep a check on the various Hindu rulers during the 17th century. This fort was contrasted in the year of 1612. However, it was later captured twice by Sambaji, son of the famed ruler Shivaji n 1683 A.D. Later in 1741 A.D. it came under Portuguese rulers. During their reign this for was rebuilt. It was in the year 1892, when Portuguese has abandoned this fort completely.

From the fort, you get not just a mesmerizing view of Vagator Beach but also of the, Ozran Beach and Morjim Beach. A view of the Chapora River is also captivating from the fort. There are wide walls with ramparts where tourists can walk and explore the entire fort. You can also spot arrow slits, gun ports and murder holes on walls of this fort.

The fort has gained more popularity after some scenes of the hit bollywood Dil Chahta Hai was shot here. It has become one of the must visit for a complete Goa tour. Although the fort can be reached via road, if you are in a mood of some trekking, climb the hill top from the Vegator beach to reach the fort.
