Declared on the 1999, under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the Western Ghats, lying to the north of Panjim city, on the way of Belgaum. Spread across an area of 240-sq-kms, this sanctuary presents rich wildlife and captivating scenic beauty to its visitors. It is the largest protected wildlife area of Goa and has The Molem National Park within its vicinity.
Here at the sanctuary, you can spot wild animals such as Leopards, Elephants, Spotted Deer, Slender Toris, Jungle Cats, Malayan Giant Squirrels, Pythons, Cobras, Indian Bison, etc. with more than 120 bird species identified here, birdwatchers can also spot a wide variety of avian fauna.
Devil's Canion Viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the areas. It is the best place to get a view of the wild animals or to spot birds. Early morning and late evenings are the best time to spot the wild fauna. Apart from bird watching, trekking is another exciting activity to go for. Jeeps are also available, if you wish to go to the interiors of the sanctuary.
To enter the sanctuary, tourists are required to purchase a permit or ticket from the park office. It is crucial to be accompanied by a guide for exploring the forest.
For staying, you have Forest Rest Hose by the Forest Department, located at Mollem. There are a few cottages and dormitories as well at Mollem, which are run by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation.
If interest in sightseeing, you can visit temple of Tambdisurla of the Kadambas, which is at a distance of 13 km from here.
